First Dawn is different from most servers with many features being changed or removed to make game play as close to pre-alpha as possible. Some features have been included even though they are not pre-alpha to enhance game-play. Originally pre-alpha was meant to be temporary, a test world and never meant to be long term. What Draconis and his team have done was recreate the pre-alpha world and enhance it to make a playable functioning world.
This server is for both UO enthusiasts and beginners.

Below is a list of notable features of this server that should shed some light for new players so that they are not completely in the dark and may feel comfortable with the unique features of
First Dawn.

Character Build:
You get to add 99 points into your STR DEX INT.
The cap is 225.
Each skill can be trained to 100.0%
Every skill can be GMed there is no 700 cap here. Your character can be 100.0% of every skill.

The World:
The pre-alpha map is much smaller then in modern UO. It was a custom map, but you will find locations familiar. Draconis and his team have taken away the boundary markers adding more land and attractions for players to take part in doubling the map's size.

Skills:
Skills here have the original names as they did in pre-alpha. Some skills have been added for increased game play.

Alchemy
Archery
Blacksmithy
Carpentry
First Aid: Needed to heal with bandages, AKA Healing.
Harvesting: When you pick cotton or chop wood, you gather more.
Hiding
Magic: Needed to cast spells, AKA Magery.
Magic Defense: Deflects damage from spells, AKA Magic Resistance.
Melee: The combat skill, with it you can use any weapon you get.
Melee Defense: Needed to use a shield, AKA Parrying.
Mining
Peek: Needed to search another players backpack. AKA Snooping.
Stealing
Stealth
Tailoring

Spells/Reagents:
Many Spells here have different names being pre-alpha accurate.
Some original spells have been removed due to various reasons.
Reagents are not used here, you just need the spell, skill, and mana to cast.
(I will post a list of the spells and functions soon)

Hunting:
There are 3 orc encampments, 2 crypts [Graveyards], a brigand camp, some ruins, and several hidden locations you must find from quests or just old fashioned adventuring.

Banking:
Banks ONLY hold gold, items cannot go into your bank. So investing into an apartment or home is highly recommended in order to store items safely.

Player Housing & Renting:
You can purchase a house deed from the housing shop behind west Brit bank and homes can be placed outside of Britain in open fields. House deeds can be resold back to the vendor.
There are many homes inside Britain that are for rent. The sign near the door once double clicked will tell you how much rent is, the deposit price and so on.

Inside your newly placed home or apartment you may place items on the floor because nothing will decay inside the home, locking items down isnt needed. But if you wish to lock items down you do have a limited amount of lockdowns. Houses do decay, be sure to log in occasionally to refresh or the home will go IDOC [In Danger of Collapsing]. Apartments do not suffer from decay, just be sure to keep your rent in your bank box.

House Protection:
Houses & Apartments CAN BE LOOTED. So be sure to keep your door locked at all times. House keys can be looted or stolen, if a player gets your key they can unlock your door and loot your home. If you lose a key or a player gets it, you can go to the Locksmith in Britain located near the Mage Shop. The locksmith can change your locks for a price, making the old key no longer work to your door and gives you a new key. Items in locked down containers cannot be looted but CAN BE STOLEN. A thief can steal from the container, slowly taking items. If a player is in your home you cant remove them or ban them, all you can do is attack and kill them. So be sure to keep your door locked and careful while carrying your house key.

Weapons & Armor:
At the moment the only armor you can get is Platemail.
It does lower your dex while you wear it.
There are only a few weapons, staying era accurate with pre-alpha.
Colored armor can be acquired from quests and monsters.
Blacksmiths can craft armor and weapons.

Casting Spells:
You can cast spells while holding weapons.
There is no meditation skill so mana regenerates on its own.
Wearing armor will slow the regen process slightly.

Calling Guards:
Guards do not come on command, so calling guards will not help.
Guards roam around and if they see a criminal they will attack. They do not insta-teleport like on newer UO, they also can be killed. However they are very strong, attacking a guard is ill-advised. But they are not over powered a guard will kill you in 2-3 hits, keep that in mind. If someone is attacking you and you need help try and run to a guard, they will attack anyone who is Grey or Red.

Murdering/Bounty System:
Killing players over time will make you a murderer changing your name from blue to red. Each time you murder a player they may place a bounty on your head which then can be claimed and the reward collected. Bounty boards in Britain list players with bounties and the price on them. In order to place a bounty on a player you must have the gold in your bank for the amount you wish to place.

Guilds:
Players can create guilds, warring and allying each other.

Chat System:
In order to use the Public Chat System you must go into your options and uncheck the box next to disable menu bar. In the menu bar is the chat link and journal link if you wish to use them. We recommend using chat to keep in touch with players easily.
Eventually we will make accessing Chat easier.

Changing Font Color & Other Options:
Press Alt + O to access your player options.

Farming Resources:
Skinning animals gives leather.
Picking cotton for bales of cotton.
Cutting trees for wood.
Once you've cut a tree and harvested all the wood from it the tree will fall and become a stump. After awhile the stump will decay leaving a dirt patch. Eventually a sapling will regrow in its place, and over time the tree will grow back. Only Oak & Willow trees can be chopped, Magnolia trees cannot be cut down.

Crafting & Rares:
Houses and Apartments need furniture as well as decorations.
Carpenters can craft many types of furniture.
Tailors craft clothing.
Alchemists craft potions.
Rares/Semi-Rares spawn in the world at certain times, and some are loot from monsters or received from quests for all you collectors out there.

This is just a basic player guide, I will revise this soon.
Adding and editing as time goes on, First Dawn is still young and a changing world to better the game play. We the staff are open minded to all players ideas and input toward all functions of this server.

I hope this guide helps and answers some of the most basic questions.

Thanks.

Very nice work! This helps me and alot of new players to come. When I first joined the server, I was kinda confused in brit, things are kinda the same but not..so if I would have had these maps from the start, I instantly could have got to training up my character. So now future players wont have that problem. Thanks again. :)
